Welkom op Waternet
Deze website gaat over de geopolitiek van waterschaarste.
Waarom?
In mijn onderzoek rond het waterbeleid in Palestina, Israël en Jordanië, zoek ik uit hoe het komt dat het zo moeilijk is in dit gebied, waar water zo schaars is, om beter gebruik te maken van die beperkte watervoorraden. Dat heeft te maken met een aantal factoren, zoals bezettingpolitiek, het ideologische belang van water, het sussen van groepen in de samenleving die zich achtergesteld voelen en het rollen met spierballen om de eigen achterban gerust te stellen. Dat is belangrijk voor politiek gebruik, maar het levert weinig extra water op - in tegendeel, het houdt juist verspilling of onlogische verdeling in stand. Dat gebeurt ook met de Nijl, een andere casus die hier aan bod komt (Egypte, Soedan en Ethiopië).
Alle betrokkenen weten dat zo de verkeerde kamt uit gaat, en toch gaan ze er mee door. Het wordt een vicieuze cirkel die weer leidt tot grotere politisering van waterschaarste.
Die achterliggende redenen wil ik in kaart brengen en daarmee ook zoeken naar een uitweg om uit die vicieuze cirkel te geraken.
Wat?
Het grootste deel van Waternet is opgesteld in het Engels. Dit stukje van de website is gereserveerd voor pagina's in het Nederlands, met artikelen die ik de voorbije jaren in het Nederlands zijn geschreven of met informatie die betrekking heeft over de waterproblematiek in Vlaanderen en België.
Voor wie?
We schrijven hier voor wie op zoek informatie over de problematiek van water in de wereld maar niet in gespecialiseerde wetenschappelijke artikels wil duiken. Bijvoorbeeld voor leraren die hun lessen verder willen stofferen, voor journalisten die wat meer achtergrond zoeken voor een stuk over de internationale waterproblematiek, of voor andere geïnteresseerden die gewoon wat meer te weten willen komen.
Natuurlijk is wat we hier brengen steeds verantwoord en onderbouwd.
Voorlopig staat hieronder enkel nog een lijstje met links naar de Nederlandse pagina's maar we werken aan wat meer inhoud.

Waternet - a history

The history of this website goes back to 1997, when I launched it on the servers of Ghent University where I was working as a researcher. At that time its URL was http://allserv.rug.ac.be/~sdconinc/waternet/. The website also hosted the provisional website of the EURAMES Water Group, established at the September 1999 conference of the European Association of Middle Eastern Studies, which took place at Ghent University.
In the following years, the Waternet website was hosted on the Ghent University servers under http://waternet.rug.ac.be/ and http://waternet.ugent.be/. After I left the university in 2005, I created the present domain name for Waternet on waternet.be

About us
This Waternet website is online since 1997. Its initial focus was mainly on water issues in Israel and Palestine - at that time the topic of my research.
The website is now undergoing a very thorough update and redesign, with a more regional approach to the political hydrology of water scarcity.
